Sorry about the Delay! Featured Vision: Ryan McCann

Whatsup people!

Sorry about the long delay, some crazy weather came through and knocked out the power for a few days. Shout out to all the people that got hit by it, hope everyones safe. Now, for this week’s Featured Vision we look at Ryan McCann. There’s also a coupon for his work for 1 week, read more details below.

Los Angeles-based artist Ryan McCann uses his encounters with mass-produced imagery to enter a state of regression. A refusal of mechanical methods of reproduction (silkscreening, lithography and photography) leads to an exercise in manual labor, but also an intentional distancing from the ‘purity’ of the initial object. Often employing satirical text laid across the image, McCann challenges the complacent response to a heavily-circulated image by violating its physical continuity (or how it first appeared without noticeable change to its composition). What’s more, the act of burning wood becomes a constructive gesture. In adding layers of color to his images, McCann makes the experience of viewing the work similar to that of reading a graphic novel: colors convey emotional gradients and text becomes the accompaniment.    Ryan McCann has a background in sports as a former Quarterback for the UCLA Bruins and Cincinnati Bengals. When his career was cut short due to a shoulder injury he started lighting things on fire. Ryan’s portrait of renowned UCLA Coach John Wooden titled “Coach” is part of the permanent collection in the UCLA Hall of Fame. He has also done commissioned work for Gibson Guitars, Patron Tequila, and the World Champion New Orleans Saints. Ryan currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

DSV Featured Vision: Mear One… duh

So its pretty easy to tell that this week has been all about Mear One. To finish it off we focus this Featured Vision on the man behind the myth, the “Michelangelo of Graffiti”, Mear One. Also, starting today there will be a coupon to get 20% off of any of the weekly featured artist’s prints for one week (seven days) after the article is posted. The info is below, don’t miss out!

Coupon Code: REAM1
Enter the code above at checkout for 20% off any Mear One print. Sale ends 6/23/12.

Mear One (Kalen Ockerman, b. 1971, Santa Cruz, CA) began his career in 1986 as a graffiti artist living in Los Angeles. Mear One has been labeled “The Michelangelo of Graffiti” and “The Salvador Dali of Hip-Hop.” He is considered by many to be Los Angeles’ most prolific graffiti artist because of the way he revolutionized graffiti with his fine-art realism, breaking out of tradition 2D letter forms, and using perspective to develop complex characters with dynamic backgrounds in epic scale. By the early 1990’s, he had established a large fan base through his notorious work on the streets, underground hip-hop album covers featuring his iconic imagery, and his involvement in pioneering early street wear clothing and graffiti culture. In 1993, Mear was the first graffiti artists from Los Angeles to travel to Tokyo and paint graffiti in front of a live public audience. In mid 90’s, hip hop imagery and cultural icons were replaced with a deeper, more introspective conversation based around a politically disillusioned reality that he felt hip-hop had ceased to address. At this point he began his transition from street graffiti to canvas paintings, and began his first body of acrylic and airbrushed paintings..
